I like the road-building in Settlers II but I can totally see why they gave you full control of your units from the third game on. The Settlers Online (The Settlers Online: Castle Empire) is a free to play browser based strategy game that utilises familiar mechanics from the core Settlers franchise. It has to be relatively modern (as I’ve likely played it if it is older than the past 3 years or so). (By that itch, building and optimizing a complex economy, but something like an old Impressions game or even Creeper World may do in a pinch). This is a very popular game because it is so easy to enjoy. If you want something that is still about colony management but comes with a very cheeky style, then you should take a look at Tropico 4. I’m looking for something that will scratch that itch. Here is the full list of games like The Settlers that we are going to check out. I just had to restart a campaign mission five hours in because I was in a position where I would have rely on catapults to stand a fighting chance and it would have taken several hours more to gain the upper hand (even with the speed up cheat, which is prety much essential). Settlers 2 was probably my favorite game.
I have been replaying the original since last week and the nostalgia is the only reason I'm sticking with it. I enjoyed Settlers II when it came out and enjoyed the Anniversary Edition a couple years ago. Developers from Blue Byte studio created a new 10 mission campaign where we lead Romans who seek new lands in order to restore the fallen Empire.

The Settlers II: 10th Anniversary is a modern remake of the most popular installment of the cult strategy series The Settlers, released as the celebration of the game's tenth anniversary. This makes it easier to direct your troops to the frontlines and also has the benefit of not wasting your precious gold coins (you can kick fully trained troops out and then have them replaced by rookies). The story is about a group of Vikings who were thrown out from Valhalla and want to return to Odin's table. It's a game in the tradition of game classics like The Settlers 2 or Cultures.

Valhalla Hills is a building strategy game developed by Funatics and published by Daedalic. The combat in the original can become a total slog, dragging out a mission and making it very unfun. It is an extremely good game with a lot of depth in the base game and exponentially more with mods. ago Factorio is what I came to say as well. For any people stumbling across this thread in the future: definitely get the 10th Anniversary Edition instead of the original Settlers II. Northgard is an RTS like Settlers, with tiles and limited buildings per tile so its strategic which resources you want, with multiple victory paths.
