If someone interested in this book can’t stand having a story that isn’t happily ever after or with many plot twists or any unreseolved issues, then this book isn’t for them. Austin carefully weaved themes of faith into the book in a natural way, also describing many doubts, struggles, and failures on the parts of some of the main characters in their Christian walk. Austin gave hints along the way about a major surprise revealed close to the end of the story.įinally, what I appreciated most about this book was the focus on God in a way that was not overdone or underdone. Without spoiling the ending, I really appreciated how Ms. Another thing that helped build the suspense was the mysterious dreams/nightmares and foreign words that Anna would remember. Austin created in this work, as she consistently left the reader wondering what happens next as she would switch focus from the past to the future and then back to the past. I greatly enjoyed the mystery and suspense that Ms. Switching back and forth from past to present and then back again, gave this book a rich sense of history as well as unity in themes between different generations and situations. I thought that this was confusing for the first half dozen chapters, but then I actually thought that it added to the themes and suspense.
I really appreciated the history in this book with Geesje’s family moving from the Netherlands to America and then their journey to Michigan with the changes and difficulties along the way.Īt first, I was not too fond of the constantly changing focus in this book, as the attention would move from Geesje de Jonge to Anna Nicholson, from past to present, from chapter to chapter. Although set in Holland, Michigan, this story is so relatable and could easily have been located in any small town in the 1840s or 1890s. Lynn Austin masterfully blends the stories of two women in two distinct generations into one compelling story that looks at hardships, joys, times of doubting, persecution, travel, immigrating to America, love, loss, faith, and family. The two main characters in this work are Anna Nicholson and Geesje de Jonge, who might have grown up in different times and locations, but have dealt with similar situations and struggled with many things. Austin gave to her characters in Candle in the Darkness, and I was not disappointed in the way she developed her characters in Waves of Mercy. Lynn Austin even before I read Waves of Mercy, as some time ago I read her work, Candle in the Darkness, which was one of my favorite historical fiction works that I’ve read lately set in time of the American Civil War.
